Utah County Interesting Facts: Provo
Home to Brigham Young University, Provo is rich in Utah history. Provo is Utah’s third largest city and Utah County’s largest with a population of over 100,000. The city’s Peaks Ice Arena even hosted some events in the 2002 Winter Olympics! Now that you have a little background on the city, let’s take a look at some interesting facts about Provo.
- The city has one of the best economies in the country, boasting a $16 billion market! Need a job? Consider looking in Provo!
- In comparison to every US city, Provo leads the country with the highest percentage of Latter Day Saints at 88%!
- In recent years, Provo became just the second city with access to the high-speed Google Fiber. That may be due to the fact that Utahns use Google more than any other state.
- Five billion-dollar companies were started in Provo. The list of highly-successful companies includes Vivint, Qualtrics, Ancestry.com, Novell, and Nu Skin. The first three are even located along the same street!
- The first Big Boy burgers was started in Provo, and it was also Utah County’s first fast food restaurant.
Payson, Springville and the Rest of Utah County
While Provo leads Utah County in size and an incredible economy, the rest of the county is still worth mentioning. Payson, Spanish Fork, and Springville all offer fun and interesting facts, but Utah County is full of other great cities. Take a look at the list below to learn more!
- With a population of over 500,000 citizens, Utah County is the second largest in the state.
- In 1935, a boxing match was held at the bottom of the dried up Utah Lake. The lake has since filled with water, of course!
- The city of Springville was first called Hobble Creek by early settlers, as horses were often hobbled (tied up with some mobility) and left by a nearby stream.
- Springville also has a nickname: Art City.
- Later named Payson by Brigham Young, the city was first called Peteetneet Creek after a Ute Indian chief.
