Fresh Breath and Your Orthodontics

Many people worry about bad breath, a fact that is especially true for those wearing braces. Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is a common symptom that can negatively affect a person’s life. Bacteria is the main cause of halitosis and braces provide even more places for germs to hide. However, keeping your breath fresh and teeth clean while wearing braces is not hard to do. Here are a few tips from your Provo area orthodontist.

How To Keep Your Breath Fresh

Pay Extra Attention to Your Oral Hygiene

You should always keep up on your good oral hygiene habits, but it’s even more essential when you’re wearing braces. Follow these practices to keep your mouth as clean as can be:

  1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day.
  2. Be sure to brush the gums while brushing your teeth. Also, clean the roof of your mouth and your tongue.
  3. Use a soft toothbrush and a small glob of toothpaste when brushing.
  4. Switch to a new toothbrush about every ninety days or whenever the bristles wear down.

Fresh Breath Accessories

Here are a few other products that can keep your breath smelling fresh:

Antibacterial Mouthwash: Our local supermarkets contain countless varieties of antibacterial mouthwashes. Most of them work just fine, but you may want to check out a list of  American Dental Association approved mouthwashes.
Water Picks: These dental hygiene devices can safely flood your mouth with a thin jet of water, which can help flush away trapped food that may be left behind after brushing and flossing.
Breath Mints: People who wear braces shouldn’t new gum or eat sticky candies, but sucking in breath mints is not an issue.
